Official Training Programs

Fred Klinge Fred Klinge, General Manager of the Pelican Athletic Club in Mandeville, Louisiana, has developed suggested training schedules for the Marathon and Half-Marathon distances. Also posted are Marathon training articles and resources you might find useful as your prepare the 2009 New Orleans Mardi Gras events. Fred is currently certified by the American College of Sports Medicine as a Health/Fitness Instructor. He has completed 25 marathons and has a personal best time of 2:18.15. Fred participated in the 1984 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in Buffalo, New York and he served as a training coach for the successful Little Rock Marathon Training from 2003 through 2005.

Training Schedules

Two training schedules are provided for both the Marathon and Half-Marathon events. The Basic schedules are designed for novice runners and those whose goals are to successfully complete the race. The Advanced schedules are designed for experienced runners who have time goals in mind.

The following prerequisites are strongly recommended for the advanced training schedule: running consistently for at least three years (e.g., 3-4 runs/week, 25-40 miles/week); previously completed a 26.2 mile marathon; and no chronic injury problems.

Local Training Groups

The official Marathon training schedule begins on Monday, September 1st with the first Saturday group training on Saturday, September 6th. The Half-Marathon training schedule begins Monday, September 22nd and the Half-Marathoners will join the Saturday morning training groups on Saturday, September 27th. The training program will run through race day, Sunday, February 1, 2009.

New Orleans - Audubon Park

Don Quintana The first New Orleans training group will start meeting Saturday, September 27, 7:00 AM at Shelter #10 at Audubon Park. This shelter can be reached by the Magazine St. Park Entrance that leads to the Audubon Golf Course Clubhouse. There should be plenty of parking and there is a water fountain and bathrooms.

The group will be led by Don Quintana. Don has run competitvely in high school and college and was an assistant cross country coach in college. He has over ten years of running experience and has completed two marathons: Chicago and Boston. Don has the intention of running New York, Memphis, First Light Alabama Marathon, and the New Orleans Mardi Gras Marathon in the next six months. He also plans on running a marathon in all fifty states. Don participated on fundraising/training teams for his first two marathons (Team CARE and Run for the Memory).

North Shore - Tammany Trace

Saturday morning group training runs will start at 7:00 AM sharp at the Mandeville Trailhead on the Tammany Trace. For more information contact Fred Klinge (985-966-7887).

Baton Rouge Half-Marathon Training Group

Jenni Peters Training for the Mardi Gras Half-Marathon is underway in Baton Rouge but interested participants are invited to join anytime. The free training is sponsored by Varsity Sports and directed by long time runner Jenni Peters. Peters was a member of the U.S. Track and Field and Nike National teams. She was ranked in the top-20 runners in the world in the 10K. She qualified for the first ever Olympic Trails marathon for women with a personal best of 2:39:28.

The beginner group starts the first week running one mile with weekly build-up from there. Runners in the middle group should have some experience running but no significant miles, strength and tempo work in recent months. The experienced group is for runners who have been training fairly consistently.

Workout locations and types vary, check the calendar at Varsity Sports. Baton Rouge workouts are in purple. Workouts for the week are posted each Sunday evening.
